THE STORY

This film follows Alma, a young Middle Eastern woman as she goes to meet her boyfriend's family for the first time at their pool party. She is nervous already and when they all begin obsessing over her body hair, her nerves are elevated. She then must detangle her relationship with her own body hair before herself and a razor get the best of her.

The Details

The Characters

Alma is a young Middle Eastern woman who is still finding herself. She is both sensitive and stubborn at once. Alma cares deeply about what people think of her and bases her decisions often on what folks say to her. When her low self-esteem combines with criticism she often practices self care in ways that are ultimately more self destructive than caring.
Alma is dating the charming and simple, Zach. He is excited for his family to love her as much as he does, but when they interact Alma feels all eyes scrutinizing her.

The Production Design

The set dressing on the films will function in order to further the characterization of Zach's family as stilted. The use of crisp colors will amplify their stiffness as well as show Alma's desire to fit into the group. Additionally, certain spaces will have a tightness to them that will mimic Alma's mindset and increase her anxiety. The set dressing in all places will work to establish more about each character as well as how comfortable or uncomfortable they will feel in the space.

The Camera

The camera work on this project will for the most part be still and fixed, watching the action unfold. There will be a few exceptions to the rule but all the movement will be motivated by fear or intensity. Additionally, much of the look will focus on framing the characters and the action in ways that mirror the strangeness or anxiety found in the scene. With the large focus on the body the camera will not shy away from showing characters and how they relate to their bodies.
